Seriously, I think this game was made just for the Etrian Odyssey creators to test new mechanics for Etrian Odyssey Untold 2. It combines the exploration of Etrian Odyssey and combines it with the characters from the Persona 3 and 4 franchises. Made for the 3DS this game is just ever Etrian Odyssey and Persona fan’s wet dream. Wait, did I say I was only going to have one Shin Megami Tensei game on this list? Guess I lied. But I have plans to pop this in and sit back and relish. I’ve played it once and there are newer, shinier games. The game was just remade and rereleased on the Nintendo 3DS this past year. New map applications open up that provide a better sense of navigation without ever making it feel too easy but also not forcing me to work for it past the point of caring. The game’s skill progression is also top notch. It’s one of the few games that I recommend you have pen and paper on hand just to chart certain aspects. There are many many secrets on every floor that you explore, and not all of them are clearly marked. You negotiate with demons to get them to become part of your party (not unlike Persona or Pokemon). Picking one out of all the glorious titles. I wish I could put more games in this epic franchise on the list, but I’ve chosen to focus on just one. This is it’s own game, harkening back to its roots.

What can I not say? It’s an entry from the Shin Megami Tensei game franchise. I recommend you just shut that system off otherwise be prepared to be spoiled by trolls like I was.īoth games are available for Playstation Vita, and Demon Gaze II is also available on Playstation 4. Oh, and there is a notes system similar to Dark Souls. The first game can be challenging and is a money-based game, which was a bit of a turn off.

They are all girls and in addition to the main storylines, you can date them. You capture the bosses that you defeat and they become a part of our team. The graphics are anime-esque and are created around harems and waifus, which can be a bit off-putting. The game does feature some ecchi-material, and dating sim aspects. The second game is not only more friendly (actually, it’s ridiculously easy, even on hard mode) but even the storyline felt more attractive. If you are new to this genre of games, I recommend starting with the second one. Not because the battles are hard, but the maps themselves feature many land-based traps. The first entry I have no spent much time with. I believe it is one of Nippon Ichi Software’s first foray into this subgenre (I could be completely wrong on this, please let me know). The second entry appeals to me more than the first. With the possible hint of a game in the works for the Switch (but we’ve only seen a single teaser on this with no information.) How the franchise will hold up now that Nintendo is possibly moving away from dual-screen and handhelds remains to be seen. A game for the 3DS is currently in development, Etrian Odyssey Nexus.

The newest game in the franchise is Etrian Odyssey 5, the earlier two games were recreated in a side series known as the Untold series. It’s easy to forget there is a storyline, and usually it does not blossom until the last few levels. The storylines are deep despite being bite-sized, and barely in between. The first couple of games make the secrets not-so-obvious (which I appreciated) but later games in the franchise tend to mark them. In terms of exploration this series is top notch. It offers various icons and the ability to write notes. Made in the style of games where you grab your own graph paper and map out the floors by hand, the games are made on handheld DS systems, and the touch screen is used only for the mapping. The star mechanic that sets these games apart from others in the genre, aside from the cutsie anime-graphics and intense, but fun difficulty, is the ability to create your own map.

Even though it wasn’t my first entry in this genre it is this series that began my addiction. I’m not even going to try to tackle these games individually. The first entry in this list is a series.
